Memorial to Flight 5191

This Sculpture is about honoring the lives of those we lost on Comair Flight 5191 that crashed during takepff at the Bluegrass Airport in Lexington, Kentucky on August 27th, 2006.
The message I tried to bring to the children who helped create this work is that life is precious and short, so we should make the most of our lives and leave the world a little better than the way we found it.  Each person on that flight gave something valuable to the world and had lives that should be celebrated and remembered.
The children of Cassidy Elementary School were divided into small groups and asked to assemble bird forms that I cut from wood.  They were allowed to assemble them in any configuration they desired. They were given newspaper clippings about one of the people on the flight and asked to decorate the bird with something from the person's life to honor and remember them.
There was magic in the room that day. The children worked together diligently and created wonderful memorials to each person while music filled the air.  The mood was not of sadness, but of joy and creativity. At the end of the day there were 49 birds drying on a table filled with the love and imagination that the children put into them.  It was a wonderful experience for me to be with tem and watch their creative energy in action.
The painting in the center of the mobile symbolizes the portal to the afterlife and the birds were arranged in a spiral configuration ascending towards the center. I attempted to cluster the peoples's spiritual representations by common interests, traveling companions and families while locating the bird forms in an aesthetically pleasing display.  The mobile is made of canvas, wood, wire, string and acrylic paint.  It spans nearly  8 feet in diameter and 4 feet in height.
Whether I succeeded in expressing my message is for the viewer to decide. I do know that I have reached the children because they have already made the world a little better with the work they did on this sculpture. The lives of the people on board that flight have touched another generation to bring inspiration and greater purpose to the young lives in this project.

The Mobile is currently on display at Family Practice Associates 1775 Alysheba Way, Lexington KY.  It will be moved to the Aviation Museum of Kentucky 4316 Hangar Drive at the Bluegrass AIrport in August!!
